21 Feb EMPOWER SELECT COMMITTEES TO ENSURE LAWS LIKE SOSMA DONT GET MISUSED AGAIN
Congratulations to Attorney General Tan Sri Tommy Thomas on his brave move to discontinue prosecution proceedings against the 12 detainees held under SOSMA, for allegedly supporting the defunct Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
This is indeed great news. Family members and Malaysians are now eagerly awaiting for their immediate release and I hope the authorities will not delay this any longer.
I am glad that justice has prevailed in this instance however it still does not erase the fact that these individuals were arrested under the cruel, oppressive and inhumane SOSMA.
There is no question that SOSMA must be abolished. There are already sufficient laws to deal with terrorism, trafficking of persons as well as organised crimes under the Penal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code.
At this coming March sitting, we must empower the Select Committees such as the Select Committee for the Consideration of Bills and the Select Committee for Human Rights & Constitution Affairs so that they work together and provide Parliament with a viable solution on existing laws, and to strongly recommend that draconian laws like SOSMA be buried away from our books.
