03 May FIRST WOMAN CHIEF JUSTICE IS THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR THE JOB.
Congratulations to Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat on her appointment as the new chief Justice of Malaysia. She is the first female to be appointed to helm the judiciary.
Her appointment to this unique and historic post is a huge step forward for the women’s movement in this country that have been campaigning for greater representation and participation of women in key decision-making roles.
Other appointments such as Datuk Noor Farida Mohd Ariffin as the chairman of the board of directors for the Human Resource Development Fund, and Datuk Nor Shamsiah Mohd Yunus on being appointed as the Bank Negara Governor are steps forward for women’s participation.
I hope the Government will continue to allow capable women to take up leadership roles in the future. It is hard for women’s voices to be heard if they are deprived of the opportunity.
It is certainly a continuation of the Government’s policy of upholding integrity, justice and the rule of law. Appointing prominent individuals with established track records of promoting these important democratic principles is a step forward.
It reflects the Government’s commitment in combating corruption and the abuse of power in order to reform key institutions in our country.
